About R. Diane Martinez
I am a native New Mexican, I grew up in Gallup, NM. My parents are Robert and Ony McClanahan. I graduated from Gallup High School in 1973. In 1973 I married Robert Martinez, a native of Wagon Mound, NM. He was the NMJRA state champion bull rider in 1969. At one time he held a PRCA card to bull ride.
When our five children arrived it was a lifestyle change. He started team roping. He heads and heals, He has won many buckles. Won several with our daughters. Robert as won many awards for his carvings as well. Now we have six grandkids and four son-in-laws. We have horses, cows, dogs, turtles, parakeets, and a new litter of bunnies.
My family and environment have greatly aided in the inspiration and development of my art work. My studio is a peaceful place where my creative energies are at their best. I am a self taught artist. I am always experimenting with new ways to make my pottery better. My pieces have won recognition world wide. My pottery isn't my only skill. I have won awards for my beadwork, textiles, photography, baskets and jewelry.
I love sharing my art with others. Children show their inner light when given a chance to express it in clay. Adults become happy children with clay. I have taughts hundreds of people to make pottery. I love sharing my pottery with people from around the world and sharing my culture. I started out as a member of a collective in 1988. I loved it so much that I became an individual license holder in 1990. Robert sells my work daily on the Santa Fe plaza and I stay home and make my pottery. I go and sell on the PLaza a few times a month as well.
